A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
